Below is the latest Pound for Pound rankings update after Shakur Stevenson's win in September. Using a criteria that takes into account everything from accomplishments to current form, let's take a closer look at the top fighters inside the ring. Considering he fought four times over a 12-month stretch ending last November, a schedule far busier than the average elite fighter, the assumption makes sense.Īlvarez will have an interesting decision to make upon his return next year regarding whether to run back the Bivol rematch, which appears to be his preference, or finally accept the challenge of David Benavidez, a two-time champion at 168 pounds who many believe has the perfect mix of size, skills and mindset to give Alvarez trouble. One might believe the latter to be true after Alvarez revealed this week he will be out until at least next May with left wrist surgery following a recovery that could push his return all the way to September 2023.

Not only did Alvarez seem to find his ceiling in terms of dramatic rises in weight when he lost to WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in May, the Mexican superstar didn't look that much better in September when he faded late in a decision win over 40-year-old Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy bout.Īt 32, Alvarez is either starting to slow down some 17 years into a career that began at age 15 (and has encompassed 62 pro fights), or the difficult schedule carried out by the four-division champion in recent years is starting to catch up. The cons on "Promises Kept" I would have to say are the drums, just not a whole lot of variation, and the vocal delivery, they fit the album, but just not that good. For as next level as Canelo Alvarez appeared to be in 2021, when he ran away with fighter of the year honors after becoming the first four-belt undisputed champion at 168 pounds, his results this calendar year have been a mixed bag. Last, the overall feel of the album, and production is just wonderful. First, the guitars are melodic with out taking away the overall aggression of the album.

Average drum parts, but there's not much to do drum wise at least on a record like this. As with most hardcore albums the bass is audible, which is one of my favorite parts of the album, it's just something about the bass that just makes you feel the emotion and aggression in the songs. Don't expect any gutar solos, just straight up power chords, they manage to add melody at times with out taking away from the overall attitude of the track. Vocal wise you have your typical hardcore punk yell, nothing new but it goes with the album wonderfully, and I found myself singing along several times. There really is no filler here, every song seems to fit, and add to the album. "Promises Kept" moves at a frantic pace, with every track being in between the 1 to 2 minute marker. You can hear the raw energy, and passion in the recording, something that is rare in most modern albums. From the moment the first track began(Well when the instruments come in) I could just tell that these guys knew how hardcore was supposed sound. After listening to one of their songs on Bridge Nine's website(The label that released "Promises Kept")I decided to pick this album up.Įxpecting a mediocre Hardcore punk album I threw this in my Cd player. So when one of my friends was rambling on about this band called Champion, and saying they reminded him of Youth of Today, Judge, and other punk influenced hardcore bands, I decided you check them out. However that statement is usually followed by someone talking about the newst metallic "Beat you face in if you don't believe what we do" hardcore band. When someone says Straight Edge Hardcore, the glory days of bands like Minor Threat, and Gorilla Biscuits pop in to my head. Review Summary: Straight Edge Hardcore played like it should be!
